Happy Halloween!

Her festive Halloween shirt & bow (thanks Gammie!)

Grace likes holidays.  She even likes getting dressed up and was happy to hear that the nurses at the doctor’s office appreciated her festive attire.   Mama was glad to hear that Grace does NOT have another ear infection and simply has a cold; it’s the post nasal drip that’s making her cough so much and waking her up all night long.  Good to know that it’s nothing worse.

Our darling little dragon

Grace got to go trick-or-treating for the first time today.  She enjoyed being able to see her friends Cher (our doula) and Joanne from Daddy’s work as well as the neighbors from around the house.  She wasn’t quite sure about all the people growling at her (despite lots of practice, Grace was to shy to growl at most folks except for Ms. Joanne and only after lots of prompting).   While we did carry around a little bag with a spider on it, we didn’t collect much candy (Mama’s orders), but we did get an apple, which Grace looks forward to enjoying with lunch tomorrow!

All dressed up!

Today for day care, Grace got to wear the costume that Mama got her last year to tuck away for this year.  Unfortunately, it was so well tucked away that Mama forgot about it and so got Grace a dragon costume, and then re-discovered the tu-tu.  Great news is that at daycare, they have a ‘character day’ where they dress up as a character in a book.  Grace dressed up as Olivia the Pig, who loves many things, one of which is ballet.  She was excited to see her friend Daniel this morning and show off her fun outfit!

Fun with a balloon!

Mama’s friend Keri completed her dissertation defense on Tuesday and got lots of balloons to celebrate.  Knowing that Mama had a little girl who loved balloons, Keri sent a balloon home to Grace.  She spent all yesterday evening and this morning playing with her balloon– what fun!   She’s also saying her own version of balloon, something like ‘aa-oon?!’

Also, this afternoon at daycare, there was a curriculum festival where we got to learn about each of the centers that Grace is able to play at every day.  It was very informative to learn about the activities that they do to enhance pre-reading and early understandings of patterns and numbers and scientific discovery.  Once again, it is affirmed that Grace is in a great daycare.

Wacky-Tacky-ish

Long time readers might recall last season’s wacky-tacky day with clashing plaids…  That was more than Mama could bear today, so we compromised and Grace got to pick her own shoes and socks today– leading to a subtler version of wacky- tackiness.  So we still fit into the definition of wacky-tacky day, but it didn’t make Mama want to cry this time.  And hey, it was festive!

Favorite team day!

Our little State fan!

Today at daycare, it was favorite team day.  AJ wore a Manchester United shirt, Daniel some NC State gear and others opted to skip the special stuff.  Grace was all decked out in her NC State gear too, more because she was completely unwilling to keep the LA Dodger’s hat on her head for more than 2 seconds, so we knew that she wouldn’t be a good Dodgers representative.  She nearly had a fall in the floor crying spell over Greg trying to put the hat on, so we opted for something less objectionable.  I mean, who can argue with a red windbreaker?

PJ day!

Do I have bed-head?

Do I have bed-head?

Today was PJ day at day care– and Gracie was happy to bring her teddy bear and wear her footie PJs, and keep her passi just for authenticity.  Yay for spirit week!

Tonight at bathtime, Grace was distressed to be in the tub.  Where was the splashy girl of two weeks ago who had a great time pushing her ducks under and getting Mama & Daddy wet?  She screamed and tried to get out, despite the water being a good temperature and nothing notably painful looking on the bottom of her ducky tub.  All I can figure is that she got water in her ears one time to many and doesn’t want it to happen again?  Any suggestions for getting our girl, who loves to splash in the sink back into loving her bath?

Pointing at cows

Pointing at cows

So while we’d planned to go to the fair yesterday, having more time to actually visit our favorite places was high on the list of priorities, as was bringing Daddy along.  Since he was a little under the weather on Friday, we postponed to today when he was feeling a little better.

To prepare, Grace got up a little later than normal and also took a long nap (as if she knew what fun was coming).  We hit the fair around 11 and we got to see lots of animals– Grace wanted to touch them all, so many of our pictures have Gracie’s hand reaching out for the baby ducks, the cow, the goat, the (fill in the blank here).  She also got quite good at pulling herself as close to the pens as she could get in her stroller.

So we did: 1. Get a picture of the family taken at the same spot that Greg & Erin sat 6 years earlier as sweethearts… 2. get a new cut out of Gracie’s profile from Karl 3. see cows, goats, chickens, pigs, etc. 4. see the bonsai trees (Greg’s favorites) 5. eat fair foot (Gracie enjoyed her chicken fingers and french fries– and didn’t seem to mind the double helping of veggies at dinner to compensate…)

We did not 1. get rained on (whew!) 2. get to see the racing pigs (it was to close to nap time) 3. go on any rides– we checked several out (a teacup ride, some swings, a merry-go-round and a small dragon roller coaster designed for very small people) but we decided that those are treats best saved for next year (or maybe even the next).

Where we had expected to spend two hours tops, we were there until 3:30 and so when we got into the car (note: Grace has been sweet and smiley, waving and dancing, and aside from objecting to being in her stroller towards the end of our time at the fair– all around a sweetheart) we snap Grace in and realize mid-way home that she’s awfully quiet.  When we get home, we see her folded over in her car seat, ZONKED out.  Having fun at the Fair is hard work, clearly!

Fair Time

Today the Robinson family is going to the Fair!  Long time blog readers might remember that last year, Grace slept through much of the fair.  We’re hoping that this year she will enjoy the Petting Zoo, racing pigs, seeing lots of cows, goats and ducks, having her profile made (again this year) at the Village of Yesteryear, and maybe even riding a teacup (jury’s still out on that one).

We’re all looking forward to it, and pictures will be posted sometime this weekend.  Yay for the Fair– a fall treat!

Editor’s Note: Due to a late start and a semi-sick Daddy, the fair was postponed to Saturday.  Instead, Gracie got to go home a little early and play with her toys, and Mama got to see her play outside with her friends on the playground!

Sweet ‘baby’

Today, when Mama came to pick Gracie up for class, there was a note on the board about how Grace stole Diana and Sam’s hearts today by giving hugs to cheer them up.  This was a special treat for those two because they consider Grace a ‘baby’ (one wonders how you get that designation– AJ is younger than Grace…).  There was also a note on Grace’s sheet saying that before nap time most days that Grace likes to go over to Sam’s sleeping spot and play for a little bit because Sam makes her laugh.  Yay for sweet girls and fun friendships.

The note on the board :-D

Eating Family style

One of the many things that we like about Bright Horizons is their policy for toddlers to eat ‘family style’, or all together.  Here’s a picture of the class, sitting down to breakfast.

While Greg and I were both raised in the South, I’m not sure that either of us would truly consider ourselves “southerners”, however, Grace, as a proper Southern girl, must develop an appreciation for the breakfast food, grits.  Mama ate enough of them while pregnant to assure that Grace would have her fill until she’s at least 4, but they’re so good, we wanted to make sure that Grace had an opportunity to sample them for herself…

Riding a 'pony'!

Riding a 'pony'!

Gracie loves being able to spend time with her Great Grandma Emmy.  She likes to walk all over the house and look at the birds and eat Cheerios (preferably off the floor) and sing along with the TV (she doesn’t get to watch TV at home, it’s a special treat at Emmy’s house).

Snack time with Larry

Snack time with Larry

Grace was so glad to get to see her Great Aunt Jenny today and got to play at her lake house with Leroy the dog.  She played on the porch and sat on the couch and snuggled with Great Aunt Jenny and danced, and played so hard that she came home and *passed out* for her nap.  She came back to Emmy’s, napped and then had dinner and back to bed in order to get lots of rest for another day of fun tomorrow!
