She’s a cutie-pie. At least the parents think so.

We wanted to make this post available to you. Please share with us some comments about Grace — what makes her cute, unusual, endearing, quirky, creative, or just plain fun?

Mama’s entry:  Grace is cute because she splashes in her bath.  Wanna see?

More than a handful

More than a handful!

More than a handful!

Grace is getting so big that she fills (and overflows!) Daddy’s arms! We’re excited that she’s growing so well and every day, we’re glad that she’s developing so happily under the guidance of her day care providers. We found out today that one of her teachers, Ms. Kay, will be leaving in a few weeks. This is sad for Gracie who loves to play with Ms. Kay, but I’m sure that Grace will make friends with her new teacher too.

In other news, we’re pretty sure that Grace understands the word “Duck”. She says it whenever she’s holding her yellow soft duck, and when shes in the bathtub (surrounded by ducks). Of course, she sometimes says it when we can’t see a duck, but it’s entirely possible that she’s looking for her duck at that point. We think that she picked that word up because in her Exersaucer, she had a series of buttons that would make animal noises, and the duck button was in the center, and therefore got pushed the most, and heard the most. Hmmm. So no Ma-ma, no Da-Da, Duck. You have to wonder a little bit about that, but hey, at least our girl knows what she wants, right? A nice warm bath (with floating ducks) and a snuggly friend once it’s all over. I guess that’s not so bad after all.

Party time!

Yummy... cupcakes!

Yummy... cupcakes!

Today, Grace’s friend Daniel turned one. This was lots of fun because Grace was invited to his birthday party in the toddler’s room, complete with cupcakes! As you can see, Grace thought that cupcakes sounded like a great idea! It’s sad, however, because it means that next week, Daniel will be moving up to the toddler’s room. Of course, Grace likes to go visit the toddlers pretty frequently, and already has a few friends who have transitioned (Diana, Emerson, Sam), so she likes to go play with them when she’s able to cruise up the hall (with Ms. Katina’s supervision, of course). So while it’s sad that Daniel won’t be there every day to keep Ms. Grace on her toes, she’s going to be joining him sooner than Mama can imagine!

For now, Happy Birthday Daniel! Thanks for sharing your big day (and your cupcakes)!

Outta my way!

Move over buddy!

Move over buddy!

Today, AJ was in Grace’s way. I’m not sure what she wanted to get to, but she was on a mission. She quickly crawled right over him, and you could almost hear her thinking “Eat my dust”. Perhaps she’s just encouraging him to start crawling– he’s still trying to figure that one out.

With her friend AJ

With her friend AJ

Grace is delighted to return to day care. She greatly enjoyed her time in Charlottesville, but is so glad to see all of her friends! When we got out of the car for day care, she started clapping and grinning, because she knew where she was going. When she saw Ms. Katina, she immediately wanted a hug– it warms a Mama’s heart to know that her girl is so well cared for!

Holding hands :-)

Holding hands 🙂

Today Grace will get to see a friend that she met in utero, but hasn’t ever seen in person. When Anna was pregnant with Aaron, Mama (and Gracie) went to Anna’s shower, but because Anna and Aaron live in CA, that was the last time we’ve been able to see them. Fortunately, Anna, Justin and Aaron are all in Charlottesville visiting family, so these two kiddos will get to play! What fun! After that fun lunch, however, it will be time to hop back into the car and head home. What a wonderful (long) weekend!

At church

At church

Grace has been to our church, The Church of the Good Shepherd many times, however, she has never been to another church. Today, she’ll get to try things out at Saint Pauls, and then, if she’s not to tired, there are rumors that we’re going to lunch downtown! Good thing Mama brought the suction cup placemat; I see a mess unfolding… 🙂

Update: Grace *LOVED* IHOP– although I’m not sure the folks who clean up at IHOP loved Grace– I think that about one of every 3 pieces of pancake that were cut up for her made it onto the floor… But she loved eating with everyone, and drinking (carefully) from Mama’s cup.

After church, Grace convinced her Great Grandma Ginny to read her a story. Mama caught a little bit on tape…

A pool party!

Watching Haley do cannonballs

Watching Haley do cannonballs

Grace hasn’t been to a pool before, so she’s pretty excited about getting to go to Great Grandmother Ginny’s birthday party this afternoon at Great Uncle Owen’s pool. Don’t worry, we’ve got swim diapers (what a funny concept!), floats and lots of SPF 60 sunscreen. It’ll be a blast if bathtime is any indication!

Update, post pool party: The water was a bit cool for Grace’s tastes, being a bathtime kind of girl, so the float didn’t go over to well, as evidenced from the picture…

And she’s off…

A short pause in perpetual motion

A short pause in perpetual motion

Well, maybe not quite yet, but she’s practicing all over the place. She’s always going somewhere, and the first photo I took this morning was blurry because she was moving so fast in it! So Grace continues to zoom around practicing walking until she has it just right. I’m thinking that she’ll show off those walking skills for her Great Grandmother Ginny this weekend… What fun!

Crowned the queen of... Orgo?

Crowned the queen of... Orgo?

So when I was in college, many of my friends were Pre-Med. Studying for Organic Chem tests always kept folks up late into the night, past the time when any sane person would have realized they should be in bed. I recall one such late evening, being awoken to loud laughter in the common room outside of my room. I arose to tell the studiers to be quiet and found a group of people wearing what I think were carbon chains (made from their model sets) on their heads. Clearly, the Organic chemistry had gone to their brains. So what does this have to do with Grace? Well, this morning, while she was playing with Ms. Victoria, our Grace wore a little crown which was oddly similar to those carbon chains of years gone by. Is it forshadowing? Will our girl be a Chemistry major? It would sure make her Daddy proud! (And Mama would cheer from the sidelines where she’d be quietly trying to keep moles, molarity and molality straight from one another)

Of course, while Mama was recalling college, the next photo I took also had a college slant– Grace knows all about the sorority head tilt that one can find in all sorority group shots! She was practicing here… 🙂

Tummy time, Grace style

Tummy time, Grace style

Grace was happy to get to daycare this morning, and immediately made her way over to the bookshelf, to both examine books and to try to climb to the top of it. This was made a little more difficult by the fact that Mama made her wear shoes today, but that just slowed her down, it didn’t stop her in her quest to reach the top of the bookshelf. Here’s to curious little girls, getting into everything!

Grace also mentioned her excitement about Uncle John (the music teacher) coming to daycare today. It’s gonna be a good day (of course, when is it not a good day for our sweet girl?)!

Reading stories

Starting to read a story

Starting to read a story

Grace was a little slow to start this morning– she’s trying to grow teeth (we can see them just below the gums) so sleeping through the night is a little rough right now. The last 3 nights, she’s woken us with bloodcurtling shrieks from her room at 5:30, only to be comforted with some milk and snuggles and fall back asleep. She’s drooling everywhere and won’t go anywhere without something in her mouth. I hope that the teeth come soon, because she’s not quite her sunshine-y self when her mouth hurts. Of course, even hurt-y teeth don’t stop her from liking to read. This morning, she walked over (with Mama’s help) to see Ms. Victoria and immediately took the book offered and started to ‘read’.

Engrossed

Grace was to busy playing this morning to look up to say goodbye. The good side of this is that we were spared a teary goodbye this morning. It’s good to see that she’s so curious and interested in how things work!

Drinking from a cup

Drinking from a cup

With help, of course… Turns out, Grace doesn’t really like the sippy cup. However, she likes the individual parts. She chews on the spout part (but won’t suck on it to get the juice out) and she likes to drink out of the cup part! She does a pretty good job drinking from a cup, as long as Mama is careful and doesn’t try to tip the cup to much. She’s growing up so fast!

At the park

At the park

Grace is getting to be a big girl! Today we went to Lake Benson Park and played outside for a while. The swings were out in the hot sun, but the slides and other play equipment has a shade over it, so Gracie tried her hand at it. She’s still unsure of the whole slide thing, but sure did enjoy being outside on a beautiful sunny Saturday!
