Prune juice

Grace has had a rough week.  With all the excitement of Thanksgiving, she forgot to poop.  It was no big deal when Monday passed with nothing, or Tuesday, or even for that matter Wednesday.  By Thursday, Mama was beginning to get concerned, so she called the doctor on Friday, who suggested Gerber’s apple-prune juice, or pear juice to try to jump start things.  Friday came and went with no movement, so Mama called the advice nurse again on Saturday and was told that baths in baking soda help, and taking her temp too.  So after several bottles of prune juice, 3 baths and 3 temperature takings, things finally made their move last night at about 1:30 am.  (Mama had to grumble that it happened on her watch, but she was also very happy that Grace’s little tummy was no longer tight).  Now we just have to wonder if it’s safe to restart the rice cereal…  Guess that Mama will be calling the doctor again on Monday.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Grace was happy to enjoy Thanksgiving with her Great Grandmother Emmy, her Great Aunt Jenny, Great Uncle Larry, second cousin Elizabeth, Grandpa, Uncle Chris and Godfather Alex.  The only person missing was her Uncle Mike, who called us from New Orleans (unfortunately, Grace was taking a nap, so she didn’t get to talk to him).

She’s still not sure what the big deal with turkey is, but she did enjoy her rice cereal…  She also enjoyed all of the napping people who were willing to snuggle her and let her sleep on their lap.  She also showed off her new baby vocabulary to anyone who would listen and giggled at her great grandmother’s jokes.

While Grace is visiting her Great Grandma in Reidsville, her Great Aunt (Great in both respects) videotaped Grace both talking and dancing (two seperate videos).   The shirt Grace is wearing is one that Erin’s Mom picked out when helping Erin chose something cute for a friend’s daughter.  Once Kaylee grew out of it, Amy was kind enough to send it back for Grace to enjoy something her maternal grandmother had chosen.  As the shirt says, “Cowgirls Rule” and I am sure that somewhere up above Grace’s grandma is grinning to see such a happy smiling baby enjoying the shirt.

*Note: When traveling, Grace uses disposable diapers, as you can see in the dancing video.  We are excited to try g-Diapers from now on, however.

Grace was lucky today that she got to meet one of Daddy’s roommates from graduate school, Brett Jones & his wife Rebecca, and their daughter Mia today.  We had not seen Brett, Rebecca & Mia since slightly after our wedding in 2004.  (Brett & Rebecca couldn’t come because Rebecca was 8 months pregnant with Mia at the time of our wedding)  We were delighted to see them and enjoyed getting to know Mia a little better.  We were also happy to hear that there will be a new member of the Jones family around May.  Mia thinks that it will be a boy because there are already 3 girls (including Daisy, the dog) and there should be more boys.

After our visit with the Jones’, we stopped by the Brusseau household to say “Hi” to Greg & Karen.  Because it was past Grace’s bedtime, we couldn’t stay long and we hope to be able to visit for a longer period next weekend on our return from Thanksgiving with Emmy & Erin’s family in Reidsville.

Visiting NC State

Grace considers joining the OASIS staff

Grace considers joining the OASIS staff

Yesterday Mama took Grace to campus to see her friends in the OASIS office.  While I was there, I got to take a nap under Mama’s desk (the darkest place in the room) on top of my changing pad and blanket.  This was the first time I’ve been to OASIS when I was wide awake.  Here is a picture of Keri, who had just defended her dissertation proposal– doesn’t she look happy?!  After we heard about Keri’s defense, Mindy cuddled me for a while before Mama put me down for a nap.

The snowy day (or morning)

Grace's snowsuit!

Grace's snowsuit!

When we got up this morning, Daddy pointed out that it was snowing!  Mommy hurriedly put Grace into a snowsuit so that she could interact with snow, which to this point, she had only heard about through ‘The Snowy Day’.  Unfortunately by the time we’d gotten a new diaper on, and zipped up in the suit (with the appropriate number of photos snapped), there weren’t many flakes to be seen.  This did not deter Mom & Dad however…

Look... it really did snow!

Sleep begets sleep…

So we’ve been doing a nap every two hours during the day and putting Grace down at 7ish each night.  Amazing to me, Grace slept from 7 pm (with minimal crying going down) until 4:15 AM on day 2 (well, I guess since it’s morning, it’s officially day 3) of sleep training.  Even going back down a few minutes ago there was less than 10 minutes of crying.  It really is about watching for her sleep cues and getting her into bed as soon as we can based on those cues.

If things keep going this way, I will be able to return to work with Grace sleeping through the night.  Last night she slept from 7:15-12:45 and then from 1:30-6:15.  We’ll see what tonight holds, but I am hopeful, very hopeful.

Time for me to tiptoe back into bed since she’s had 10 minutes to settle herself.  Ahhh, sleep. 🙂

Hair clips!

Today Grace wore clips for the first time, and <gasp> they stayed in her hair!  Now our girl can go out wearing yellow or green or blue without threat of being called a ‘cute little boy’.

Clip girl!

Clip girl!

Of course, her Mom isn’t entirely sure that she likes the implications that girls must always look feminine… As someone who has studied women’s studies and the Psychology of gender, she is a fan of dressing Grace in whatever color she likes and forcing people to consider that blue isn’t only for boys.  Of course, if Grace ever has a brother, we’ll see how it goes dressing him in pink & purple…

Sleep log

Sleepy baby

Sleepy baby

So I have started trying to keep a sleep log for Grace as suggested by ‘Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child‘.  This also includes putting Grace down for a nap every two hours, which thus far, Grace has cooperated with.  I think part of this is that she gets to use her travel bed, which she loves to sleep in (she’ll sleep from 10:30 pm-6:30 am in the travel bed, but in her cradle at home she’s a 10:30-4:30 am kind of sleeper).  We’ll see how this goes; maybe our Grace wants to take more naps. She’s also sleeping a lot better now that the doctor told me that sometimes babies with reflux just sleep better on their tummies.  Unfortunate from a SIDS perspective, but from a getting the sleep she needs perspective, night time is a *LOT* easier now.  When I forced her to sleep on her back, she just wailed– on her tummy she settles and sleeps within 5 minutes.

I must admit that the bar graph looks kind of funny…  I need to figure out a better way to represent this information…  And I’m really looking forward to the sleep from 7 pm-7 am thing…

Great Catch

I was a great baseball player once.  A third baseman.  The “Hot Corner.”  Today, I was bottle feeding Grace since Erin was out having some well earned fun time with a friend.  I fed her.  No problem.  Burping went fine.  I correctly positioned the burpcloth to catch any flak. Then, I put her on the bed to find her blanket.  When I reached down, I heard her slump to the side of the pillow. (that head control is still developing.)

At that point, I reached up to get her.  I heard her gurgle and spackle.  I anticipated a spew: Boom!  I prevented her from scoring a direct hit on the blankets.  Her vomit trailed all along my hand, fingertip to wrist.  I caught it though, baby.  I caught it.

Emmy's

At Emmy's house

Grace enjoyed spending the night at her Great Grandma Emmy’s house.  She liked getting a bath and eating her rice cereal.  Grace also says that she slept like a baby while she was there; but I guess that only makes sense…

So today Grace got to hang out with the Greatest Aunt Jenny while Mom presented at her conference.  Grace had a good time in Canton visiting her ‘pretend cousins’.  She came back to the hotel and was able to go out to eat with her Godfather Alex and Alex’s ‘lady friend’ Katie.

Tomorrow Grace is looking forward to seeing her Great Aunt Jenny again, and spending the night with her Great grandma, Emmy.   Erin is looking forward to staying with Emmy because it breaks the trip up into 2 approximately 2 hour trips.  If Grace is *REALLY* lucky, she’ll get to do a quick swing by her Robinson grandparent’s house, but that depends on when Mom’s conference gets over (Great grandma Emmy doesn’t like for anyone to be on the road after dark).  Tune in tomorrow to see if Grace got to visit the Robinsons…

Off to Asheville

Grace and Mama are packing up to head to Asheville for NCCPA.  Grace is glad that her Greatest Aunt Jenny will be able to meet her there, and so instead of having to go to the boring conference, Grace will get to hang out with her Great Aunt!  Sounds like more fun than one little girl should have all at once!
